EXCERPT

I lifted my right hand, reaching for my iron stake out of instinct, even though I knew it would do no good against the prince.

“You shouldn’t do that.” His voice was deep with what reminded me of an English accent. “I know you want to, but it would be very, very unwise of you, Ivy.”

              My hand twitched.

Creepy Prince smiled slightly. “Your friend has been very helpful.”

That got my hackles up. I slid my sunglasses onto my forehead and forced my tone to stay calm and level. “I’m sure she has. Speaking of Val, happen to know where I can find her?”

His lips curled in a semblance of a smile as he stepped closer. The prince was tall, taller than Ren, who was pushing six foot two. My entire back stiffened as I forced myself to hold my ground, even though every instinct demanded that I run and run super fast, because he had almost killed me once before. Correction. He would have definitely killed me if he hadn’t realized what I was and had, I guessed, healed me.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, instead of answering my question, his pale blue eyes fixed on mine.

My hand curled into a useless fist. “That is extremely creepy to hear.”

That cold smile returned. “Why don’t we talk? There are seats across the way.”

“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.”

The slow smile increased but never reached his eyes. “Oh, I know it is.”

Fine hairs rose on my arms.

“What exactly can you do right now?” he said in the same coldly polite voice. “Refuse me?” Creepy Prince laughed, and it wasn’t a bad sound. Again, it was something that was just cold, as if he were mimicking what a human would do. “You can’t.”

“I can.” My palm itched to grab the thorn stake secured under my pant leg, but I held still. I might be reckless, but I wasn’t stupid.

“Really? I will have to beg to differ on that. You see, humans surround us. So many of them, and I have an extraordinary appetite.” His eyes appeared to glimmer as his gaze slithered from the top of my curly head down to my toes. “A rather impressive appetite for many, many things.”

“Okay. First off, ew.” My lip curled. “Secondly, I don’t want to hear about any of your appetites.”

One dark eyebrow rose. “Oh, but you should know that I could kill twenty of these humans in less than five seconds and feed on the rest, leaving them to believe that it was this little red-headed girl who murdered these innocent people.” His voice dropped even lower as he leaned in and icy air brushed my cheek. “You deny me this, those lives will be on your hands, little bird.”

Anger flushed hotly as my eyes met his. There wasn’t a single part of me that doubted anything he said. He had me. God, I hated to admit it, but he had me.

Review of The Player (The Game Maker #3) by Kresley Cole

The Player (The Game Maker #3) by Kresley Cole

25343787

Review: At first I d I hounded my local Barns and Noble for this book for weeks, till they final got it in a month later. I could not do anything from stopping myself from racing home to read this book from cover to cover! I was so happy to finally have the last book of The Game maker series within my grasp!!!

I was sucked right back into this world without a second look back and loved reading more about the characters from the previous books. It was great to see them years later and still happy as ever.

At first I didn’t really know what to expect from Dmitri, since I had only had second hand thoughts of him from the other characters in the books. I am happy with how he did turn up to be in this book. Although the whole time I was reading I just kept thinking this can’t be it, right? Because it felt as if something was missing, normally Cole’s books have a spark of intensity added to the plot and characters, that drive you to not stop thinking about them. And I didn’t get that from this book……

Till almost at the end Cole hits you in the face with it!!! I mean wow, I am so amazed that she was able to keep that part of Dmitri from bursting all over the book. I am so happy she pulled this out at the end and left me reeling from it.

334 pages. Paperback.

4 out of 5 stars.

Adult. Romance. Erotica. Mature Themes. Mature Content. Contemporary.

Published by Valkyrie Press.

 Excerpt

Quaid

I tapped the edge of my thumb on the black-and-white mug shot photo and couldn’t stop the grin from tugging at my mouth.

                She tried to fire me.

She was five-foot-nothing, a lifetime younger than me, had multicolored hair that had seen better days, wild eyes that couldn’t decide if they wanted to be green, gold, or brown, while dressed in convict orange and obviously scared out of her ever loving mind, yet she still tried to fire me. If it had been any of my other clients—the cop accused of sexual battery, the frat boy accused of manslaughter over a bet on a football game gone wrong, the middle school teacher accused of pedophilia and having an inappropriate relationship with several of her students, or the pro football player accused of domestic abuse—I would have tipped my proverbial hat, wished them luck while I cut my losses, and walked away without a backward glance. People always committed crimes. People always needed a good defense, so it wasn’t like I was hurting for clients, but there was something about the girl. Something about the defiant tilt of her chin and the raw desperation in her tone when she begged me not to call her father.

“I don’t want your help. I don’t want anything from you.” She sounded like she meant it when she said it, but I figured she was too young and too scared to know exactly what she wanted or needed. Regardless, it was still refreshing to hear.

Everyone always wanted something from me and my help was usually the least of it.

I tapped the picture again, wondering why I found it so easy to believe that she really hadn’t been a part of the boyfriend’s plan to rob the bar. She wasn’t anyone’s idea of a model citizen and she had the shady track record to prove it. She was too young, and frankly too adorable, to have a file this thick. From what I could see, she had a set of parents always willing to ride to the rescue when she got herself into trouble. She looked like some kind of colorful woodland fairy from a Disney movie with her odd hair and delicate features. None of it added up, but the sincerity in her tone when she said she would never have gone with the boyfriend if she knew his intent and the fear in her eyes when I mentioned her father seemed genuine.

I learned long ago to treat everyone like they were guilty of whatever it was I was paid to defend them against. I didn’t want to know the truth. I didn’t want to know the circumstances. I wanted my clients to listen to me and let me do my job as I tried to convince the rest of the world they were innocent, regardless if they were or not. But this girl with her faded, rose colored hair and turbulent eyes oozed innocence through the cracks of a very guilty façade.

Because I was intrigued and actually believed the girl might be innocent, I wasn’t going to let her fire me. I was going to call her father and hope that he would help me keep her out of the slammer while I figured out how to plea bargain her charges down or get them dismissed altogether. Again, because a cop was involved in the robbery and because the boyfriend, junkie or not, was offering up a pretty plausible explanation for Avett’s involvement in the crime, nothing was a slam dunk, yet. I was going to help her whether she wanted me to or not.

The Comic’s Dungeon! #3

Hello! This is an original post made and hosted by by Ali’s Reviews and More!

This weekly post is about comic books, or mostly discussion about the comic book of the week.

This week will be….

Rat Queens

Summary: Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they’re in the business of killing all god’s creatures for profit. It’s also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack –

-Summary from Image Comics.com

Female Amazingness. Romance. Mature Content. Mature Themes. Adventure. Gore. Bearded Women. Paranormal. Fantasy. Fiction.

My Thoughts: I wasn’t too sure about this comic at first, because all I knew about was second hand knowledge from a couple of my friends. None of which could actually tell me what the heck it was about. But after a very persuasive conversation on a ferry ride home from Geek Girl Con, I read the whole first volume ( Issue’s 1-5? I think?). Anyway, around page 10 I was hooked. After that I got my hands on as many issues that were out, and since then have not stopped following along with the Rat Queens adventures. I think this is one of the most female strong, badass, intriguing comics that I have read or heard about. I mean come on! Can you guys name another one like this? I am very much looking forward to where the series goes to in the future and what other comis it inspires.

Rating: 4 1/2 stars out of 5 stars.

The Comic’s Dungeon! #1

Hello! This is an all new post to Ali’s Reviews and More!

So this post is an original (meaning I’m doing this on my own and not following another blog). These post’s will consist of new or old comic books that I am reading. I will also be adding discussion’s ( or tagging them from other blog posts) to theses. Also these post will happen on Sundays, just cause I feel like it. I hope you all enjoy it and much as I enjoy writing it.

So for my first Comic’s Corner I will be talking about….

Shutter by Joe Keatinge (Author), Leila del Duca (Illustrations)

Summary: INDIANA JONES FOR THE 21st CENTURY! Marvel Knights: Hulk and Glory writer Joe Keatinge teams up with artist extraordinaire Leila del Duca for her Image Comics debut in an all-new ongoing series combining the urban fantasy of Fables and the globe-spanning adventure of Y: The Last Man. Kate Kristopher, once the most famous explorer of an Earth far more fantastic than the one we know, is forced to return to the adventurous life she left behind when a family secret threatens to destroy everything she spent her life protecting. Collects Shutter #1-6.

My Thoughts: I am just crazy in love with this series! Every time I open up a new issue, I never know what to expect from the plot or characters. And don’t even get me started on the characters! I love that there are always new ones and old ones popping up in this series, and its strangely easy to keep track of them all. But I think the best thing about Shutter is how original it is, because no matter what else you read. Nothing will ever be like this series, it really is one of a kind.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

Do you guys like that no matter how many characters there seems to be, every single ne of them always have an in-depth background?

Manga Monday! #77- Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka

Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka

10339042
Review: One of many great classical series from Osamu Tezuka that I am just in love with! This one is a great series of his to start off with because it has everything you could possibly want in a manga. Adventure, romance, pirates, mean Gods, powers, gender bend-ish, and fighting! It will make you laugh as well as cry, and never leave you hanging!
5 out of 5 stars.
1-2 volumes in this Omnibus edition.
Manga. Classic. Young Adult. Mature Content. Mature Themes. Mythology. Romance. Adventure.
Published by Vertical.

Summary: Set in a medieval fairy-tale backdrop, Princess Knight is the tale of a young princess named Sapphire who must pretend to be a male prince so she can inherit the throne. Women have long been prevented from taking the throne, but Sapphire is not discouraged and instead she fully accepts the role, becoming a dashing hero(ine) that the populous is proud of.

The playful cartooning style of Princess Knight is comparable to that of Disney, à la Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Considered by many as one of the first major shojo works, inspiring comics for girls such as Revoluntionary Girl Utena, Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon for generations to follow. A rare shojo property from the godfather of manga, Princess Knight has been long considered one of Tezuka’s most popular works worldwide.

Release Day Luanch for Getting Lucky by Mia Storm

“Getting Lucky”

a song by Tro Gunnison

Wouldn’t care if I could. I’m up to no good.

Taking what I want instead of what I should.

I’m made of pure greed. There’s shit that I need.

The mask is off and the demon’s freed.

 I’m gonna get drunk.

I’m gonna get played.

I’m gonna get rich.

I’m gonna get laid.

 And I’m gonna get Lucky.

Raised in the system, Shiloh Luck’s first sixteen years have been anything but lucky. After winning The Voice, she’s finally living the dream—a record contract, talk shows, a North American tour opening for the hottest band out there. Everything is going according to plan…until their front man, Tro Gunnison, explodes her life into chaos. He’s shallow, self-centered, and completely infuriating, and he’ll do anything for notoriety. Including her. Like it or not, she’s stuck with him for three months on the road, but the longer they spend together, the more she begins to realize there’s more to Tro than anyone has ever dug deep enough to find. If his attention is anything other than just another publicity gimmick, she might let herself see where it leads. But before she can risk everything, she has to be sure.

If there’s one thing that Tro Gunnison has learned in the six years since he left his past in the dust, it’s that living life big, bold, and totally outrageous keeps people from seeing past the glare. He’s buried his demons beneath six feet of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and he’s convinced no one will ever dig them up…until Lucky. She’s young, but not naïve, and without even trying, she sees past the façade to the man underneath…which scares the hell out of him. Because what started out as smoke and mirrors has somehow turned real, and for the first time in his life, there’s someone he cares about more than himself. But it turns out getting Lucky could be a double-edged sword.

He’s always been sure it would be his past that would bring him down, but it might turn out to be Jail Bait instead.

EXCERPT

One. Two. Three deep breaths, pumping myself up for what comes next. People I’m supposed to smile at. Questions I’m supposed to answer wittily. Hundreds of eyes on me that I’m not supposed to be affected by. No big deal that if I fuck up and say the wrong thing, game over.

“That bad?”

The deep male voice rumbles through me, smooth in the middle but rough all around the edges.

And close.

My eyes snap open and my gaze darts through the backstage gloom as a dark form materializes out of the shadows next to the stack of crates I’m sitting on. The red cherry of a lit cigarette glows a streak across the dim as he lifts it to his mouth and takes a long drag. As the glowing tip brightens, it illuminates a mass of dark curls that stick up at every angle and appear to only ever have been combed by the multitude of women’s fists that have been twisted into them. Thick dark brows arch over deep-set eyes so intense I’m convinced I feel them burning a hole through mine. A slightly crooked nose leads my eyes to a square jaw covered in dark scruff, and a pair of firm red lips that are currently smirking at me.

Tro Gunnison.

I nearly fall off my crate. He’s the guy every woman in the world wants to fuck right now. His nude Rolling Stone cover last fall made sure of that. He’s outrageous in everything he does and notorious for the long list of celebrity hearts he’s left broken in the two years since Roadkill exploded onto the music charts.

My eyes trail down the tattoos on his neck to the black T-shirt covering what I know is an incredible body. (Yes, I’ve seen the Rolling Stone cover.) But I catch my wits and pull my eyes away, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me ogle. I’ve spent enough time around his type in the last few months to know that’s what they get off on.

“If I said yes?”

He blows out a long stream of smoke and stalks around to the front of my crate, leaning his elbows onto it and staring up at me. “Then I’d be compelled to ask why.”

“And if I told you it was none of your fucking business?” I challenge.

His mouth pulls into a crooked smile and a little bit of devil flashes in his dark eyes. “Then I’d think you’re not only hot, but mysterious too.”

A sudden whoosh of butterflies in my chest sends a rush through me that tightens my groin. I mentally crush them into dust because I’m not letting Tro Gunnison turn me into some swooning groupie. I’m way the fuck smarter than that. Growing up in the system means you grow up fast. I know how the game is played, which makes me hard to play. If I fuck him, it’s going to be on my terms.

“Whatever,” I say with a roll of my eyes.

“You’ll be at the show tomorrow?” he asks, taking another drag off his cigarette. “I could get you backstage.”

I feel my eyes start to widen with my surprise and stop them. He doesn’t know I’m his opener. Guess he’s too fucking high and mighty to concern himself with the rabble and hangers on. But when I get past feeling a little pissed off, I realize something about him not recognizing me is liberating.

I lean back against the wall and decide to have some fun with it. “What show?”

He gives me a curious look—the same one I nearly gave him a minute ago. But then his eyes rake down my body and the corner of his mouth curves into that devilish smile again. “Better idea. What are you doing right now?”

I can hear them doing sound checks on the other side of the wall, which means they’ll be ready to tape our segment in a few minutes. They’ll be calling for us any second. “Working.”

He drops his smoke and grinds it out with the heel of his biker boot, then pulls a pack of Dentyne Fire from his pocket and offers me the open end. I slide out a stick and fold it into my mouth.

He does the same then shoves the pack back into his pocket. “C’mon.”

I slide to the edge of the crate. “Where we going?”

“Somewhere that’s not here,” he says, holding out his hand to me.

A wave of nostalgia makes me shudder. This feels like something me and Lilah would have done back in the day. I know it sounds backward, but I miss no one giving a shit about me. I miss doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Now that I’m everybody’s paycheck, they monitor everything I do. Image is everything, after all.

I hop down and take his hand, feeling more than a little dangerous as he leads me toward a door at the back of the sound room. He glances over his shoulder at the crew scrambling around the fringes of the set before punching the panic bar.

“No alarm. That’s good,” he says, stepping through.

“Shiloh!” I hear Billie call from somewhere backstage. “You’re on in three!”

Tro tows me into through the door into a dimly lit storeroom without slowing down. Course, he has no clue that Billie was calling for me. Tro’s supposed to be out there too for our segment, and if I didn’t know he’s probably going to catch more shit than me for this, I’d be shaking.

“What’s your name?” he asks as he strides past racks of props and stage gear, my hand still in his.

“Lo.”

“I’m Trotte.” He glances back at me, where he’s towing me along like a dingy. “Don’t ask.”

“Tell me about your name,” I say with a smirk when he ducks behind the shelves in the back of the room.

He spins me up against the wall and pins me there by the upper arms. “I’ll give you the whole story only if you trade me something for it.”
