Manga Monday! #79- Apollo’s Song (Apollo no Uta #1-2) by Osamu Tezuka

Apollo’s Song (Apollo no Uta #1-2) by Osamu Tezuka

Review: A very old and classic manga art style, but also a very interesting plot line. And by interesting I mean totally out of this world weird plot line that I had a hard time following. But with Osamu Tezuka’s work from back in the day, every one of his pieces hints at a larger meaning behind what you see in his manga.

Summary: Better to have loved and lost…

The gods with their poetic justice, can be unrelenting. Just ask the young cynic Shogo, who sinned against love. Electroshock therapy was only meant to bring him face to face with his own violent misdeeds, but instead landed him in the court of a stern goddess.

If the encounter was a hallucination, then it’s a hallucination that starts to encroach on reality in this unforgettable tale penned by manga-god Osamu Tezuka and inspired by Greek myths of divine unforgiving. Sharing with his longer work Phoenix the themes of recurrence and retribution as well as the spirit of high invention, Apollo’s Song explores the meaning of love and the consequences of its absence.

Shogo’s mother is a bar hostess, his father could be any one of a dozen of her regular patrons. Growing up, he learns nothing of genuine love and tenderness, and when he witnesses his mother in the nearest approximation of which she’s capable–lustful embrace–he receives a merciless beating soon afterwards. Shogo comes to hate the very notion of love. But goddesses, who are neither the Buddha nor Christ, do not excuse misfortunes of upbringing.

Apollo’s Song reaches Olympian heights of tragedy as the story proceeds from a boxcar bound for a Nazi concentration camp to a dystopian future where human beings are persecuted by an ascendant race of their own clones. Will Shogo ever attain redemption, or, like the human race itself, will he have to relearn the lessons of love forever? Is it better to have loved and lost if the heartbreak must recur eternally?

Love, propagation, nature, war, death–Tezuka holds his trademark cornucopia of concerns together with striking characterizations, an unfailing sense of pacing, and of course, stunning imagery.

Though marked by a salty pessimism, this unique masterpiece from Tezuka’s transitional period is also unabashedly romantic–and, at times, profoundly erotic. Combining a classic tale of thwarted love with cognitive ambiguities reminiscent of the work of Philip K. Dick, Apollo’s Song is guaranteed to plumb new depths of the human heart with each rereading.

The Comic’s Dungeon! #1

Hello! This is an all new post to Ali’s Reviews and More!

So this post is an original (meaning I’m doing this on my own and not following another blog). These post’s will consist of new or old comic books that I am reading. I will also be adding discussion’s ( or tagging them from other blog posts) to theses. Also these post will happen on Sundays, just cause I feel like it. I hope you all enjoy it and much as I enjoy writing it.

So for my first Comic’s Corner I will be talking about….

Shutter by Joe Keatinge (Author), Leila del Duca (Illustrations)

Summary: INDIANA JONES FOR THE 21st CENTURY! Marvel Knights: Hulk and Glory writer Joe Keatinge teams up with artist extraordinaire Leila del Duca for her Image Comics debut in an all-new ongoing series combining the urban fantasy of Fables and the globe-spanning adventure of Y: The Last Man. Kate Kristopher, once the most famous explorer of an Earth far more fantastic than the one we know, is forced to return to the adventurous life she left behind when a family secret threatens to destroy everything she spent her life protecting. Collects Shutter #1-6.

My Thoughts: I am just crazy in love with this series! Every time I open up a new issue, I never know what to expect from the plot or characters. And don’t even get me started on the characters! I love that there are always new ones and old ones popping up in this series, and its strangely easy to keep track of them all. But I think the best thing about Shutter is how original it is, because no matter what else you read. Nothing will ever be like this series, it really is one of a kind.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

Review: I was freaked out and cold the entire time I was reading this book. I also gasped and jumped back from the book a couple of times too ( or just enough for my parents to give me strange looks,  more so then normal).

This book was total trip! I wish I read more books like this!  It had me on the edge of my seat trying to know what would happen next or if anyone was getting out of this book alive!

Britt was an amazing character to read about and from her point of view the whole time. I mean it guys, she kick ass big time.

When I was finally able to put this book down, it was like I ran up a mountain and back down again, in the snow.

Ugh, I cant even! This book has me at a complete loss for words. I think all I can really say now it just go pick up this book and read it! Please!

Review of The Winner’s Curse (The Winner’s Trilogy #1) by Marie Rutkoski

The Winner’s Curse (The Winner’s Trilogy #1)  by Marie Rutkoski51YsucAPcNL__SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Review: I have heard a cray amount of good things about this book series, I am so happy I finally went out and found this book at the library.

I could not read this book fast enough, I was just pulled into the plot right away and had a hard time putting the book down. I mean this is one great fantasy world to loose yourself in for hours upon hours, or days.

The characters were really interesting too, although I had my eyes on the plot more then that characters. I did happen to be more aware of both Kestrel and Arin in the middle and through the end of the book.

Although it has been a good while since I read this book, ( I have just been lazy and busy to review this book). I think I might need to re-read it one more time before reading the second, just to make sure I remember everything right. But as I am writing about it right now, I remember the ending had me biting my nails and being upset at not having the next book within my grasp.

Summary: Winning what you want may cost you everything you love.

Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Review of Deep (Stage Dive #4) by Kylie Scott

Deep (Stage Dive #4)  by Kylie Scott18461986

Review: I think my favorite thing about this book other than it ending the series on a great note, was that we finally get to know what was going on between Lizzy and Ben.

Although this was not my favorite characters from this series, it was still an ok story line for the series. The characters were another thing that were just ok for me too. But the whole book just felt like fluff and dramatic for last book sake.

I am looking forward to anything more Kylie Scott might write, but I’m hoping this is the last of the Stage Dive series, just because I think it’s perfect as is.

Review of The Best Goodbye (Rosemary Beach #13) by Abbi Glines

The Best Goodbye (Rosemary Beach #13)  by Abbi Glines23452651

Review: When I first picked up this book I was a bit confused, because I have no clue who Rive or Addy were. I thought this was about Captain and a girl named Rose. But Behold Abbi Glines and her trickery that pulls you so far and so fast into this deep and moving book about two people that have been hurt so deep and so much that all they had was each other to love.

Anyway enough of me gushing about the feels this book makes you have about these two characters and also about a beautiful little girl ( who is the cutest!) named Franny.

There is not one moment that I put this book down, it was just too hard of a thing to do. The characters are great and have so much depth to them that I felt like I was drowning at times. The story plot was good too, but did seem to drag a bit toward the end. Anyway I am slightly looking forward to the next book which will be the last book of this series. I do love this series but the next and final book is …. well…. Nan…..

Review of Beautiful Beginning (Beautiful Bastard #3.5) by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Beginning (Beautiful Bastard #3.5)  by Christina Lauren18051336

Review: Oh my gosh! I completely love this book, just thinking of it now. I cant stop the smile from forming on my face.

This book was great from start to finish. Mostly because Bennett is pure evil and super funny. He plays the best prank on Will ever and even Hanna is in on it. The prank ( which I will not tell you about because spoilers), goes on throughout the small book. But is so funny that it feels as if its it’s own plot too. I kid you not, you will be laughing your butt off the whole time your reading the book, after the prank comes into play.

Review of Beautiful Player (Beautiful Bastard #3) by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Player (Beautiful Bastard #3)  by Christina Lauren17837783

Review: I could not start this book fast enough, but can you blame me? Nope!

This felt as if I was reading the series from the beginning all over again. Because this book starts off with some brand new characters that have not been heard of, or all that much of before. It was great!

I had a whole bunch of fun reading through Will’s point of view, and laughing my butt off as Hanna throws him through a loop after loop. And they were some great characters to mash up, because they were so different from one another.

The whole time it was as if Hanna took the lead and Will was left chasing after her in hysterics. I could not get enough of them or this book. I thought I would explode after I heard that they were getting their own novella! I really can’t wait to read it.

It was fun to read more before the wedding between Bennett and Chloe, also great to hear from Max and Sara too. They are both very cute and sweet couples. I also loved the foreshadowing on Will’s soon to be future.
